Ways to Experience Rinjani

From a short crater lake visit to the full summit push, Rinjani rewards every level of commitment.

Hard

Summit Trek via Senaru

~35km return 3 days / 2 nights

The classic route from Senaru ascends through montane forest and open savannah to the crater rim at 2641m, then camps beside Segara Anak lake before a pre-dawn push to the 3726m summit. The final 2km of loose volcanic scree requires slow, deliberate steps and can take 3 to 4 hours in the dark.

Start the summit push by 1am to reach the top before sunrise clouds build. Temperatures drop to 5°C or below near the rim.

Crater Lake Circuit (No Summit)

~28km loop 2 days / 1 night

Ascend to the rim from Senaru, descend 600m to camp at Segara Anak, soak in the hot spring that feeds into the lake, then exit via Sembalun village on the eastern side. The lake sits at 2008m and holds a turquoise hue caused by sulfuric minerals from the active vent, Gunung Barujari.

The Sembalun side descent is gentler but longer. Many trekkers prefer entering via Senaru and exiting Sembalun for better variety.

Senaru Crater Rim Day Hike

~14km return 7–9 hours

A demanding day hike from Senaru to the crater rim at 2641m and back without camping. You gain nearly 1700m of vertical through dense jungle and open grass slopes. The rim view over Segara Anak lake and Gunung Barujari is the reward. This is a genuine endurance effort, not a casual walk.

Leave Senaru by 5am to avoid afternoon cloud and rain. Hire a local guide for the trail junction at Pos 3.
Very Hard

Sembalun Summit via Plawangan II

~38km 4 days / 3 nights

The longer Sembalun approach crosses wide savannah meadows and a false summit plateau before reaching Plawangan II rim at 2900m. This route offers more acclimatization time and dramatically better odds of a clear summit. It is the preferred route for serious trekkers and guided expedition groups.

Four days allows a rest day at the crater lake before the summit push, significantly improving summit success rates.

Rinjani is not a gentle mountain. Its flanks are steep, its scree is brutal, and its weather shifts fast. But the lake inside its caldera, Segara Anak, is one of the most singular sights in Southeast Asia, a pool of deep turquoise ringed by black lava cliffs and a small active cone still puffing steam from its last eruption.

The Mountain and the Caldera

At 3726m, Rinjani is the second highest volcano in Indonesia and one of the most active. The current summit cone was formed by eruptions in the 1990s and 2000s. Segara Anak lake, which translates roughly as "child of the sea," sits at 2008m inside the caldera, covering about 11 square kilometres. A hot spring on the lake's southwestern shore, reachable only by a steep 600m descent from the rim, is a highlight of the overnight trek.

The park, Gunung Rinjani National Park, covers 41,000 hectares and protects one of Lombok's most important water catchments. Trekking permits cost around $30 USD per person per entry and are included in most guided packages.

Guided Trek or Independent?

Rinjani is one of the few major treks in Southeast Asia where hiring a guide and porter is genuinely recommended rather than just commercially promoted. The trail is poorly marked in sections, altitude sickness is a real risk at 3726m, and the final summit push in total darkness on loose scree is dangerous without someone who knows the mountain. A full 3-day guided package including guide, porter, tent, meals, and permit runs $150 to $250 USD depending on group size and the agency. Independent trekking is permitted but you must carry all your own gear and food.

Senaru village, 600m above sea level on Rinjani's northern slopes, is the main trailhead. Sembalun, on the eastern side at 1156m, is the alternative start used for the longer and better-acclimatized route to the summit.

Altitude and Physical Demands

Most healthy adults can complete the 3-day trek without prior high-altitude experience, but you need to be physically fit. The elevation gain from Senaru to the summit is approximately 3100m across 3 days. Acute mountain sickness affects some trekkers above 2500m. Symptoms include headache, nausea, and fatigue. If they appear, descend immediately. Acclimatizing by spending a day hiking around Sembalun before starting is worthwhile if you have the time.

How to get there

Fly to Lombok (LOP)

Lombok International Airport (LOP) has direct flights from Bali (25min, multiple daily), Jakarta (1.5h), Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore. Most visitors arrive via Bali. From LOP, Senaru (the northern trailhead) is ~2.5h by car. Senggigi and the Gili Islands are the common pre-trek bases.

To the trailhead

From the Gili Islands: fast boat to Bangsal harbour (30min), then 1.5h by car north to Senaru. Most trekking agencies in Senggigi, Mataram, or on the Gili Islands arrange full packages including transport to the trailhead — book 2 to 3 days ahead. The park quota is ~150 trekkers/day per gate; in July and August book at least a week ahead.

Key info

Park entry ~$15 USD for foreigners. A licensed guide is mandatory — solo trekking is not permitted. The standard 3-day package (guide, porter, meals, camping equipment) costs $120–200 USD per person. The Sembalun route (eastern flank) leads to the summit crater; the Senaru route (northern) descends to the crater lake. Most trekkers do a traverse — up Sembalun, down Senaru.

The park closes during the wet season, roughly November through March, due to dangerous trail conditions and landslide risk. The dry season window from May to October is your target, with July through September being clearest and most reliable. The summit is frequently cloud-free in these months, making the pre-dawn push worthwhile. Shoulder months (May and October) are quieter but carry more chance of afternoon storms.

Tent · crater lake camp · Rinjani

The 3-day trek package includes camping equipment and a campsite at the crater lake (Segara Anak, 2,000m). Sleeping next to the lake with Rinjani's summit above and the hot spring below is the defining experience of the mountain — no lodge replicates it. Included in the standard trek package.

Before you go

Common Questions

Guides are strongly recommended but not legally mandatory. The trail is unmarked in places, the summit push happens in darkness on dangerous scree, and altitude sickness is a real risk. Most trekkers hire a guide and at least one porter. A full 3-day package including guide, porter, tent, meals, and permit costs $150 to $250 USD depending on group size.

Yes, but do not underestimate it. No ropes or technical climbing are needed, but the final push is 2km of loose volcanic scree at steep angles in the dark at around 3500m. Many people turn back here. Regular hiking experience, physical fitness, and a slow, deliberate pace give you the best chance of reaching the 3726m summit.

Yes. The lake is swimmable and many trekkers take a dip before the summit push. The water has a faint mineral tint but is not harmful for swimming. The hot springs on the southwestern shore are the real highlight, with water warm enough to soak tired legs after the descent from the rim.

The park limits trekkers to around 150 per day per gate. In peak months (July and August), spots fill up. Booking 2 to 3 days ahead through an agency in Senggigi, Mataram, or the Gili Islands is usually sufficient. If you are planning a specific start date in peak season, book a week or more in advance.

From Gili Trawangan, take a fast boat to Bangsal harbour on Lombok's north coast (30 to 45 minutes, around $15 USD). From Bangsal it is about 30 minutes by car to Senaru village. Most agencies that arrange Rinjani treks can also organise the full transfer including boat pickup from the Gilis.

Descend or shelter and wait. Afternoon thunderstorms can appear quickly above 2000m even in the dry season. Your guide will know when to hold at camp and when to push on. If lightning approaches the exposed rim, get below the ridgeline immediately. Never attempt the summit push in rain or heavy cloud.
